One session down, lots of new ideas to go

It was good to see people from staffs both small and not so small sharing ideas this morning in the first session of the small staffs track. Since my first ACES conference I’ve taken back a lot of ideas and put them to use with my staff, and I get new ideas each year. Barbara Tarshes of the Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., had some good thoughts about using corrections from your publications and other publications as a training tool — by making each editor on the desk think about how he or she would have handled the situation. I know it’s early in the conference, but my top idea award so far goes to Brian Throckmorton of the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader for his theme of the month training program. At a lot of publications, every month should be March Mathness. I’m looking forward to a lot more idea sharing Thursday afternoon.
